    Taste of Iceland in Seattle 2016

    Experience Icelandic food, music and more at this action-packed cultural event from October 13-16!

    Seattle welcomes the return of Taste of Iceland October 13-16! This annual event celebrates various aspects of Icelandic culture, inviting Seattleites to experience authentic Icelandic cuisine, music, art and literature.     FOOD: Icelandic Menu at The Carlile Room | Oct. 13-16
    Icelandic chef Siggi Helga from Grillið restaurant will fly to Seattle to collaborate with American chef Desmond Bonow of The Carlile Room. Chef Desmond Bonow, or Dezi, is a “homegrown” Seattle chef named one of the city’s Next Hot Chefs in 2016. Chef Siggi Helga is one of the premier chefs in Iceland and is currently overseeing three restaurants, including Grillið, which has been awarded a certificate of excellence from Trip Advisor for its consistently great reviews! Mixologist Felicia Chin-Braxton will be concocting unique cocktails featuring Icelandic spirits Brennivin and Reyka Vodka to pair perfectly with your dinner.

    MUSIC: Reykjavik Calling at Neumos | Oct. 15
    Seattle and its sister city, Reykjavik, are proud to partner with KEXP for the annual Reykjavik Calling concert on October 15. Returning to Seattle, where the event first debuted, this electric Icelandic-American collaboration concert will feature Icelandic artists Fufanu and JFDR, as well as Seattle band Kinski and NAVVI! Admission to the free concert will be granted on a first-come, first-served basis at Neumos. Must be 21+ to enter. Make sure to stop by Quinn's Pub (across the street from Neumos) for a pre and post show party! Quinn's will be featuring Brennivin cocktails and shots all night long!

    ART: The Space in Between Installation  | Oct. 13
    Collaborating with the Nordic Heritage Museum, Taste of Iceland in Seattle will bring the Weather Diaries exhibit to life, showcasing the themes of fashion in the Western Nordic region. The exhibit focuses on the region’s unpredictable weather and how it plays a role in the artist's inspiration.

    As part of the exhibit, the work of Icelandic artist Steinunn Sigurðardótti will be on display October 13 through November 6 at the Nordic Heritage Museum in downtown Seattle. The exhibit offers a signature collection of Steinunn Sigurðardóttir’s work,“The Space in Between,” which is greatly influenced by the land and cultural traditions of Iceland. The extensive installation will be installed over a five day period culminating with an artist reception on October 13, where the public is invited to meet and mingle with Steinunn Sigurðardóttir.

    FEATURED INSTALLATION: “Space in between”

    LITERATURE: Literary Reading, Author Q&A, Live Music & More  | Oct. 14
    ​KEXP studios will be jam packed with the best of Taste of Iceland October 14. The event will blend together literature, history, and music, starting with a discussion by renowned author, Guðmundur Andri Thorsson on “Paper Vikings: Past and Present.” Thorsson will lead off the event with a lecture at 6 pm on Icelandic literature followed by a lively Q&A panel hosted by The Elliott Bay Book Company and Seattle City of Literature.  

    At 7 pm, Örnolfur Thorsson and Dr. Gísli Sigurðssonn, will take the stage to showcase both of their works and participate in a panel discussion on the Icelandic sagas and Norse mythology. Immediately following the panel discussion, Reykjavik Calling stars Fufanu and JFDR will treat the audience to a live “Rímur” performance! A ríma is an Icelandic epic poem written in any of the so-called rímnahættir.

    For those guests who are in-studio, KEXP invites you to explore the photographic exhibit, Sound & Vision II: Iceland Calling. The exhibit celebrates KEXP and Iceland Airwaves’ eight years of collaboration and features an intimate, behind-the-scenes look at unique recording and broadcast sessions with wildly talented Icelandic musicians.
