170 Reach the Top of Iceland
It was in glorious weather that 170 climbers with 66º North, led by Icelandic Mountain Guides, reached the top of Iceland's highest peak, Hvannadalshnukur on the southern part of Vatnajokull glacier (height 2110 m or 6920 ft).
This is the third year the 66ºNorth program has run giving people the opportunity to reach the summit of Europe's biggest glacier.
The program allows climbers to have the experience of a lifetime while learning a valuable lesson in environmental responsibility. After all, Iceland is made up of 11 percent glaciers that are retreating at an alarming rate.
The two companies work hard to use the event as a forum to educate climbers on the issue of global warming and its effect on Iceland's glaciers. The group this year was joined by writers and editors from leading outdoor publications including Adventure Cyclist, Backpacker.com, GearJunkie.com, Men's Journal, and Women's Adventure.
